Holiday Happenings in Coshocton County
Amish Country is typically characterized by the sound of horses hooves traveling down the meandering country road. In Coshocton County, the clippity-clopping is present as it is heard along the river as a canal boat is horse drawn along a restored portion of the Ohio-Erie Canal.
Steeped in history, Coshocton County is home to Historic Roscoe Village, eclectic shops and casual dining centered around preserving life as it was in the 1800s. Once a bustling port on the Ohio & Erie Canal, Historic Roscoe Village now mixes the charm and history of the 1800s with plenty of fun and adventure for today. Coshocton County is conveniently located next to Holmes County.
The holidays come alive at Historic Roscoe Village during the first three Saturdays in December. Sharing the tradition of lighting the Christmas tree and allowing visitors to share in the touching candle lighting is a memorable way to usher in the holidays.
Visitors are each given a candle that is lit during the singing of "Silent Night." The village becomes a sea of shimmering candles as the Christmas tree is officially lit. This ceremony takes place December 1, 8, and 15.
Over the weekend, guests can enjoy a visit with Santa, strolling carolers, live reindeer (December 1,only), chestnuts roasting over an open fire, candlelight tours, complimentary hot-mulled cider and cookies and many other holiday festivities. Truly a trip to Historic Roscoe Village will not soon be forgotten.
Coupled with the rich historic amenities offered throughout the year, restored canal town is a fascinating location during any season. Lodging accommodations are available within minutes of the Village.
More history is waiting as visitors can discover years gone by at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum, conveniently located in the village. With four permanent exhibits: American Indian, Historic Ohio, Decorative Arts and East Asian, the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum offers a variety of educational opportunities for every age group. Group tours, lectures and workshops are available.
If taking in a show is more your style the Coshocton Footlight Players, a community theater group performs throughout the year. Entertaining the area for nearly 60 years, the Triple Locks Theater in Historic Roscoe Village comes alive as actors take the stage.
