Every season has a flavor and regardless of what season it is one thing is for certain, the delicious recipes and wonderful dishes at The Farmstead Restaurant offers it all. As if being nestled in the beauty of Amish Country isn't enough, The Farmstead, located in Berlin, Ohio, is situated perfectly among the rolling hills, offering views of breathtaking foliage and serene farmland. While the view is one draw, the great food and baked goods is definitely another.

Specializing in traditional Amish cooking, The Farmstead's Amish cooks and bakers strive to create authentic dishes and homemade baked goods that appeal to everyone. Owners John and Rita Yoder recently celebrated their fourth year with the restaurant and are pleased with how much The Farmstead has grown in popularity and favor in such a short time. The Yoder's began the restaurant with the idea of leasing it out, but as fate sometimes intervenes, the two ended up operating it themselves.

"John felt there was a need for a restaurant in Berlin," Rita shared, "and we had the land so he decided to build one and then lease it out. However, that didn't work out, so we hired several very well qualified people and managers and things just fell into place."
The Yoder's appreciate their hardworking and talented staff and are grateful for each one. As with any business, The Farmstead can only be as good as the people behind it and the Yoder's feel the employees of the Farmstead are unbeatable.

The restaurant offers delicious pastries and baked goods that are made from scratch daily, and can be ordered from the menu or purchased from the bakery area to be taken home and enjoyed. There is a large salad bar, which is a favorite of many, along with a hot buffet that is served daily in the summer and fall months and then on weekends throughout the entire year. The buffet features roast beef, chicken and ham, real homemade mashed potatoes, noodles, and vegetables, along with many other homemade Amish foods. The mouth-watering desserts are also a great feature on the buffet.

"You can purchase our homemade baked goods, which include homemade Amish pies, cookies, breads and much more," Rita added. "We also offer birthday cakes, muffins, apple butter, and our famous Amish peanut butter spread. Daily specials are offered, along with all-you-can-eat fish on Friday nights. Thursdays we offer our prize winning ribs, which were voted the 2006 People's Choice and Judge's Choice as the best in Holmes County. Our goal is to please and we are constantly updating our menu and adding new dishes for both locals and tourists to enjoy. We've even added an express lane for our local folks, cafeteria style, so they can come in and get their food without having to wait to be served and that's set at a great price. Many have expressed to us that they really enjoy and appreciate this."

And now a new and everyday favorite has been added to the already perfect menu… pizza! The idea to create a unique and delicious pizza began this past winter when John decided he wanted to get into the pizza business.

"Since we had the kitchen and establishment John wanted to try different pizzas," explained Rita. "We tried several dough recipes… and finally came up with one everyone liked. In January of '08 we started our own pizza shop. We are located in the local room of The Farmstead and are open Monday through Thursday, from 4 to 9 p.m., and from 4 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. We also just started delivering on Friday and Saturday nights. You can pick up or dine in, in the local room. We offer a tour menu along with great subs, cheesy bread and a delicious pizza dessert."

The Farmstead will add several new items to their pizza menu in the future, and plan to feature soft-serve ice cream as well.

In addition to the grand view, wonderful food, and great pizzas, The Farmstead is also the launching area for the hot air balloons, which happen several times a week.
"You can watch it take off from our dining room or go outside and watch the launch itself," Rita said. "It's a spectacular scene."

The Farmstead also offers a beautiful, spacious building capable of hosting groups for banquets, parties, meetings and bus groups. Centrally located, The Farmstead is a convenient place for locals and tourists to meet and the beautiful landscaping is a draw for many who want to enjoy the Amish surroundings and way of life.

The restaurant, which is one of the few in Amish Country open on Sundays, is located in The Farmstead Village, just off US 62, north of Main Street and within walking distance of many area attractions, including Antiques Trading Post Antique Mall.
