For your next getaway weekend, try A Little Slice of Heaven at Sugarcreek

By Jennifer R. Demuth

Have you ever wanted a break from the stress of everyday life, to retreat into a place of peace and tranquility? Would you like to experience the simple pleasures and slower pace of life found in Ohio’s Amish Country without sacrificing the amenities? If so, the cabin offered at A Little Slice of Heaven at Sugarcreek is the answer. Guests can enjoy relaxing in a Jacuzzi for two, sitting on the deck while taking in the serene environment, and taking time away from the rat race of daily living, while only minutes away from all the attractions that Ohio’s Amish Country has to offer.

Though the idea of staying at a private, secluded log cabin in the peaceful setting of Amish Country may seem like a dream, it’s a dream worth believing. Since opening in September 2005, visitors to A Little Slice of Heaven Cabin have found the accommodations to be true to the name. Guests can choose from two luxurious suites at the cabin, which is located at 8828 Golf Course Road at Sugarcreek. On one side is the Eagle’s Nest suite, which is decorated in a golf theme and includes two large picture windows that overlook the 11th hole of the neighboring, lush Willandale Golf Course. The second suite, Country Comfort, is decorated with a rustic theme and includes pine and log furniture. Both suites have private entrances and private back decks that overlook a pond. Guests can relax on the deck with a good book while watching birds and listening to the gentle clip-clop of hooves, as Amish buggies travel down the country road.

The owners, Vance and Brenda Speas, designed the accommodations to provide a romantic retreat from the every day grind. In fact, Brenda Speas said the accommodations were designed in accordance with one of the couple’s favorite Bible verses. “But they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31. As the parents of three children, the Speas especially want couples to enjoy the chance to reconnect. “We really believe that couples need to get away and spend quiet time together,” explained Speas.

The Speas have gone to great lengths to assure guest comfort by providing many little extras, such as snacks, a small selection of CDs and DVDs, extra toothbrushes, hair dryers, and all the ingredients necessary for a romantic retreat. Each suite even has devotional books for couples and a jar full of conversation-starting questions to help spark new discussions between couples. “They are impressed with all the little touches we include to provide guests with anything they would possibly need to make their stay enjoyable,” said Speas, of comments received from past guests. “We try to make it so couples can have as much quality time together as possible.”

One way the Speas help maximize quality time for their guests is by providing keyless entry. Speas contacts guests before their arrival to give them the key code, so that guests can check-in and check-out at their leisure without having to check in with anyone.

Inside the suites, guests can rest on a queen-sized pillow-top bed, soothe tired muscles in a two-person Jacuzzi, warm their feet by the fireplace and enjoy their favorite CDs or DVDs in surround-sound. Other suite amenities include a kitchenette with a sink, small refrigerator, coffeemaker, toaster and microwave; a large private bathroom; a washer and dryer in the Country Comfort suite; French doors leading to a private wrap-around deck; iron and ironing board; snacks including coffee, tea, hot chocolate, juices and popcorn; air conditioning; and ceiling fans. During the off season, guests can enjoy an assortment of packaged breakfast items.  During the golf season, guests receive a voucher for a light breakfast.

During the golf season, guests receive a voucher for a light breakfast at the Willandale Golf Clubhouse. They can purchase golf packages that include a night stay, 18 holes of golf at Willandale and a golf cart. For those who do not wish to golf, a night’s stay at A Little Slice of Heaven ranges from $80 for a weeknight during the off-season to just $125 a night for a weekend during the in-season months of September and October. Both suites accommodate two people comfortably and are non-smoking. Guests can use cash, personal checks, Visa or MasterCard to pay for their stay.
