Find rest, relaxation and renewal at Tranquil Acres Log Cabins

By Kelley Mohr

Like most Holmes County destinations, Tranquil Acres Log Cabins can be found down an unassuming gravel path flanked on both sides by rolling hills and rippling wheat fields. However, this destination, located in the heart of Amish Country, is anything but ordinary.

Tranquil Acres Log Cabins, run by Jesse and Dorothy Steiner, feature three log cabins: Shady Maple, Cozy Pine and Tulip Poplar. These cabins can be used for honeymoons, anniversaries, weekend getaways or for any other occasion that calls for a well-deserved break from the pressures of a busy life.

Dorothy Steiner, who has co-owned Tranquil Acres along with her husband since purchasing in 2006, explained that visitors come for relaxation and respite. “People come to get away from the stress of city life,” she said.

Nestled between the trees, the Tranquil Acres Log Cabins are known as the perfect spot for comfort, renewal and romance. They are a popular destination for those celebrating special occasions, including honeymooners who are drawn to the idyllic cabins’ beautiful location and private accommodations.

“Privacy is the big thing,” said Jesse Steiner. “The cabins aren’t stacked right next to each other.” The cabins are spaced about 350 feet apart and are surrounded by trees. This seclusion allows patrons to rekindle their relationships while escaping from the stresses of everyday life.

“We have a couple on their honeymoon here now and they’ve probably left twice since they’ve been here,” said Jesse Steiner. “They said they’re going to spend their time right there.”

Privacy is the most integral feature of the Tranquil Acres Log Cabins. The Steiners even refrain from mowing the yards of occupied cabins in order to ensure a thorough sense of seclusion.

The absence of televisions and phones add to the isolated character of the place. “It’s a time to connect with each other,” said Dorothy Steiner.

Some of their clientele choose to never leave the cabins during their stay. And who can blame them? Each cabin is equipped with a spacious front porch, gas log fireplaces, air conditioning, grills, a hot tub, a Jacuzzi, an outdoor fire ring, comfortable furniture, complimentary snacks and beverages and a kitchen with a stovetop, microwave and refrigerator.

If visitors choose to venture outdoors, they are met with more attractions. For those looking to explore the countryside, nature trails wind through the forest. For those looking for some sport, a catch-and-release fishing pond is available. Animal lovers can observe the outdoor bird feeder or visit the animals down in the pasture. The quiet solitude extends indoors and out.

Tranquil Acres does not serve breakfast. “Each cabin gets a pint of milk, a pint of orange juice, four small boxes of cereal, snacks and pop,” said Dorothy Steiner. Visitors can use the cabins’ grills or kitchens to prepare food or dine at authentic Amish restaurants such as Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen or Der Dutchman Restaurant.

Located halfway between Millersburg and Berlin, Tranquil Acres Log Cabins are close to Amish Country’s many attractions. Whether visitors are looking for antique shops, buggy rides or traditional Amish wares, the cabins are just a short drive to countless possibilities.

This might be why so many customers keep coming back. “We have some that come over and over,” said Jesse Steiner. “We have one couple that comes at least twice a year and they started coming when the first cabin opened. They’ve come 12 years in a row already.”

With only three beautiful cabins available, reservations at Tranquil Acres can fill up quickly. In order to ensure a spot in Shady Maple, Cozy Pine or Tulip Poplar, the Steiners advise visitors to make reservations well in advance. “The summer is very busy,” said Dorothy Steiner. “We have one couple who books their weekend a whole year in advance.”

The cabins are available year-round and are still popular during the winter months. The heavy snows only add to the sense of peace and quiet. “Some hope they would get snowed in,” said Dorothy Steiner with a smile.
