Miller’s Dutch Kitch’n specializes in authentic Amish cooking
By Kyle Valentini
Off the beaten path is where you will often find the best of Amish Country. The quaint and quiet village of Baltic is home to Miller’s Dutch Kitch’n where they have been serving authentic Amish style cooking for nearly 40 years.
Miller’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Reasonable prices and large portions satisfy the hungriest guests.
Locals and visitors to the region call Miller’s broasted chicken the best there is. Locally raised chicken is freshly cut just before it arrives at Miller’s. Using a special process that includes marinating, breading and frying the chicken under pressure, no oil is absorbed beneath the skin and the results are tender, juicy chicken that customers can’t get enough of.
Purchased in 2008 by Kelly and Cindy Yoder, Miller’s first opened in December of 1972. Using the same delicious recipes developed by the original owners, the Yoders are carrying on a Baltic tradition. Having spent 16 years as an employee, with the last eight as manager, Cindy Yoder knew the daily operations of the restaurant and what was required to keep regular customers coming back and new ones coming for the first time.
“We are authentic,” said Kelly Yoder. “Our broasted chicken is definitely the most popular item on our menu. Our homemade Amish noodles are also a favorite and are made by a local Amish family in Sugarcreek. We make everything from scratch. Our dressings are all homemade and nobody makes a French or a Sweet & Sour dressing like we do. Customers actually buy our dressing as a carry-out so they can use them at home.”
Miller’s takes pride in preparing their tasty side dishes like Cole slaw, macaroni salad and potato salad daily in their own kitchen. Homemade soups and chili are made from time-tested recipes customers have enjoyed for years.
Lunch includes burgers and fries, open-faced hot roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy, the classic BLT, or the popular Sloppy Joe salad loaded with cheddar cheese, seasoned Sloppy Joe beef, tortilla chips and their famous French dressing.
Miller’s has a large menu, with 16 meat entrees and 26 side dishes to choose from. Favorites like Swiss steak, Salisbury steak, and roast beef are available daily and no entrée (on the menu) is over $10. All entrees include three side dishes.
With the weekend comes succulent prime rib, slow cooked to perfection by the longtime staff at Miller’s. Skilled cooks Verby and Mandy have been with Miller’s for 30 years. Miller’s also has two other employees with more than 20 years experience in their kitchen, pie-baker Katie and prep-cook Mary Sue.
Homemade desserts are a specialty at Miller’s, and everything from the fruit and cream pies to the vanilla ice cream is made from scratch. Old-fashioned milk shakes, sundaes and chocolate angel food cake make choosing difficult.
Children are always welcome at Miller’s and a special menu has been prepared just for them with appropriate portions and prices.
Perhaps you would prefer a family Style meal where pricing includes tax, tip, drinks and desserts. Choose a one to three meat meal with chicken, Swiss steak, ham or roast beef with four side dishes.
Miller’s serves breakfast and offers daily lunch and dinner specials. An all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet is available on Saturday. Banquet facilities are available for parties of up to 60 with reservations required. You won’t beat Miller’s banquet pricing anywhere else in the region.
The restaurant is located at 108 East Main St. in Baltic.
They are conveniently open Monday through Friday, from 5:30am to 7:30pm.
