Scenic Hills RV Park is both peaceful and accessible
By Joanne Lehman
For travelers who take the comforts of home with them, Scenic Hills RV Park is an ideal place to park the motor home or 5th wheel trailer. Lifelong area residents, Sam and Mary Hershberger, own and operate this RV park and like to provide a place for visitors to slow down and enjoy the peace and quiet of the rolling hills of Holmes County.
“We thoroughly enjoy it,” said Sam Hershberger. “Our goal is, we want this to be your home away from home and let you experience the peace and quiet of Berlin, Ohio.”
Hershberger said he and his wife have their own 5th wheel. They enjoy spending winter vacations in Florida where they experience the fun their summer Ohio guests have in Ohio.
This interest in camping with an RV began years ago when Sam was 18 and took his first trip with family members in a rented motor home. “We really enjoyed it and I came to the conclusion then that RVers are the nicest people you can meet.”
That has proved true, and the couple still enjoys meeting the friendly folks who roll through their grounds year after year. In 1990, Sam and Mary opened up their first campsites. Through the years, they’ve added more. Scenic Hills now has 112 sites and six super sites.
Sam Hershberger does excavation by trade. He designed and built the park to be convenient for self-contained recreational vehicles. It includes a number of pull-through sites and the layout of the park emphasizes both convenience and beauty.
They recently became a Good Sam Park, which allows campers to receive discounts and access to other perks and privileges. This organization for RV owners helps its members with RV trip routing online and sends out a magazine, among other things. Campers appreciate the Good Sam extras and the campground benefits by becoming part of the organization’s list.
Since this park is for self-contained RVs, it doesn’t have showers and restrooms and doesn’t accommodate pop-up tents. However, there are sewer, water and electric hook-ups on every site. “Our park offers amenities for large coaches and motor homes with slide-outs. We supply you with full hookups, including 30 and/or 50 amp capabilities on all our sites for your convenience,” said Sam Hershberger. Six super sites also have a patio and fire ring.
After they’ve found Scenic Hills, many guests come back year after year. Some reserve their campsites far in advance and come each year for certain local festivals. “We are a destination for people to do shopping in the area. People want to go to the cheese factory, furniture stores, and many good restaurants in the area. They like to come to some of the benefit auctions we have here. One example is Charm Days, a community run program held on one of the first weekends in October each year. Local business people host the events that provide funds for local families with special needs, said Sam Hershberger.
Unlike some campgrounds that offer many activities, Scenic Hills is a quieter place for those who want to enjoy touring in the area. “We aren’t selling go-carts or river rafting,” said Sam Hershberger, but the park does offer amenities their guests appreciate. Free firewood and a campfire ring on each campsite are much appreciated. There is also free Wi-Fi and plenty of beautiful scenery- all located close to many of the area’s most popular attractions.
Check-in and check-out time is noon but arrangements can be made to accommodate those who arrive later in the day. To make reservations, go to www.scenichillsrvpark.com or call the park at 330-893-3607. The park is located east of Berlin, across from Hiland High School on township road 367. The mailing address is 4483 Township Road 367, Millersburg, Ohio 44654.
