Java Jo Coffee Bar serving up success
Fire can be a devastating thing. It can sweep through a home or building, destroying years of hard work and incinerating memories and dreams.
However,
sometimes, like saplings rising from a forest fire, people can pick
themselves up, dust off the soot and ashes and aspire to even greater
things. That is what the staff at Java Jo Coffee Bar did
following the fire that swept through the building they were in on Main
Street in Berlin, destroying everything they had built and for which
they had become known. But that event, which happened in
January of 2006, seems like an eternity ago for Jo Weaver and her
staff, who have quickly and calmly put that experience behind them. “It’s
weird, because at times I think about that day and the memories of
standing there watching your life go up in flames and it seems like
yesterday,” said Weaver. “And other times, it feels like we’ve been here for years, and it has always been this way. “We’ll
always have the memories of the old place, but this feels like home to
us now. I think we took a negative and turned it into a positive in the
end, and now we are creating new memories.” A wonderful
coffee house has blossomed out of the old Java Jo’s, and now it is a
high-traffic area for locals and tourists alike who are seeking a quick
cup of coffee, an espresso, perhaps a sandwich or wrap, soup and salad,
or a nighttime snack. The
cafe has gone from a quaint little shop to a thriving gathering spot,
with far more than food and drink. In addition, they have added a
billiard room with a number of other interactive games, free Internet
access, and they even offer live music every Friday and Saturday
evening. “I think as far as a gathering place, there simply
aren’t a lot of places open late in Berlin,” said Weaver. “But the
biggest reason people enjoy meeting here is the atmosphere. Our shop
provides a place for people to get a drink, sit down with friends and
relax. It’s a great place to unwind.” And unlike
restaurants, which try to get people in and out to keep tables
available, Weaver and her staff encourage patrons to sit and take their
time, knowing that the comfortable and relaxing atmosphere lends itself
to that. “People are on the go, and this is a chance for them to sit down, relax and catch up,” said Weaver. For
those who are on the go, Java Jo Coffee Bar is providing a second
option, as they introduce Java Jo West — a miniature version of the
Berlin shop, located just north of the main square in Millersburg at 50
N. Clay Street. The drive-thru coffee shop will include a
walk-in front door for walk-in customers, as well as the drive-thru,
and will feature all of the same great drinks available at the Berlin
shop. Whether it’s a Smoothie, espresso, latte, Screamer or
tea, patrons may call ahead and pre-order so their drinks will be ready
for them on their way to work or at lunch. They will also
carry cookies and muffins to complement their coffee line. “It’s an
exciting addition for us, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer the
same great beverages we have here in Berlin,” said Weaver. In
Berlin, Java Jo’s is located on the square at 4860 E. Main Street.
