Feature Story : Oak Ridge Inn

Spacious comfort and a spectacular view
The Oak Ridge Inn has it all

By Joanne Lehman

Just 500 feet off State Route 39, at the stoplight near Walnut Creek, you’ll find The Oak Ridge Inn. The moment you enter the grounds, you’ll be impressed with the well-kept flowers, hanging baskets and the lighted driveway, which curves upward through stately two-century old oak trees.

Owner Joe Miller, who began taking notes years ago about the kinds of things he enjoyed in a room away from home, built this quiet and serene inn. ěWhile most hotels and inns have elegant lobbies, their rooms are often disappointingly non-descript,î he said. ěMy goal was to build an inn where the lobby was a foretaste of the suites and rooms behind each door.î

On all counts, Miller has succeeded admirably with The Oak Ridge Inn. Each room is large and uncommonly well appointed. Rooms range in size from 416-square-feet to 732-square-feet for the Miller Farm Suite, with a lovely fountain tucked into a secluded corner of its private patio.

Guests who plan to stay in the area a few days will enjoy having plenty of room to spread out. The comfortable furnishings and the generous-sized baths, with cultured marble vanities, make these rooms ideal for longer stays and the perfect choice for short overnight special occasion stays like a honeymoon or anniversary.

Each room has a kitchenette with a microwave and small fridge and a private brick-paved patio or wooden deck. Some rooms also have a two-person Jacuzzi and a gas log fireplace. Comfortable seating is a must for the travel-weary at the end of a long day of sightseeing.

The Miller Farm Suite, also called the presidential room, may lay claim to the most spectacular view found anywhere in the area. A large window in the living area of this suite faces acres of unspoiled rural valley, where farmsteads dot green hillsides and rolling fields offer the kind of vistas that confound even the most talented landscape photographer.

Miller worked with Schrocks of Walnut Creek, one of the area’s oldest cabinetmakers, to highlight a different hardwood in every room. The theme in each room is tastefully carried out, right down to the flooring and furniture. The Oak Room, also named the Sam P. Schrock Suite is another room that includes a polished oak hardwood floor in the sitting room and oak furnishings also crafted by Schrocks. It perfectly captures the simple decorations found in many of the area’s Amish homes, where antique quarter sawn oak pieces with simple glass drawer pulls are set off by dark hand-pieced quilts. An electrified oil lamp completes the picture of serenity.

Attention to detail is an important feature at Oak Ridge Inn, which first opened its doors in May of 1997. Two innkeepers, Ken Hamsher and Karen Burden, are always on hand to greet guests and ensure they have everything they need for a memorable stay. A bookshelf, table games, and coffee service are available in the lobby, along with a suggested route for walkers and joggers. The inn has free wireless Internet service and cable TV.

The Oak Ridge Inn Web site contains detailed information about pricing for each room. Prices vary with the day of the week and time of year.
