Feature Story : Saltwell Western Store

Giddy-up and ride on over to Saltwell Western Store

By Jennifer R. Demuth

Located in the countryside near New Philadelphia, in Tuscarawas County, at the junction of SR 800 and SR 416, easily recognized by the buffalo and horse statues displayed by the entrance, is Saltwell Western Store, LLC. And while this family-owned store offers a wide array of products for horse enthusiasts and lovers of western-themed clothing and décor, don’t let the name of the business fool you. Saltwell Western Store isn’t just for those who love western-theme items, it’s a destination store for anyone who follows current fashion trends and appreciates finely-crafted jewelry.

According to Sally Puzacke, who owns and operates Saltwell Western Store with her husband, Jay, customers travel from all over Ohio, neighboring states and even from out of the country just to shop at the store. They come to shop from the store’s huge inventory of cowboy boots, work boots, fashion aboots, motorcycle boots, Wrangler clothing and other western-themed clothing from infant through adult 4X sizes, leather purses and handbags, leather belts and accessories, western-themed décor and gift items, cowboy hats, equine supplies and tack brands such as Billy Cook and Tex Tan, equine feed and nutrition products, show clothing, Minnetonka moccasins, Montana Silversmiths jewelry, unique jewelry selections, and much more.

Saltwell Western Store also offers customers the ability to have items custom-made and shipped to their homes. “We can have custom boots made for people,” shared Puzacke. “If they can design it, we can probably get it made.”

It is this kind of dedication to customer satisfaction, along with the staff’s knowledge of horses, that has kept the Saltwell Western Store in business, and the store will celebrate its 45th anniversary this fall with special offers for customers. The store was founded in September 1963 by Puzacke’s parents, Vernon and Venette Mason, who opened the store out of necessity in order to obtain supplies for the couple’s horse farm. Since its humble beginning 45 years ago as just a horse supply store, the business has been expanded five times to provide the necessary inventory to meet customer needs. When the Masons retired at the end of 1999, the Puzackes purchased the store.

Having grown up in the horse business, Sally earned her master’s degree in equine nutrition and has worked as an approved quarter horse judge in shows for more than 20 years. Puzacke said the success of Saltwell Western Store is due, at least in part, to her family’s knowledge of horses. Customers know they can trust the Puzacke’s advice because they know the horse business. “People come here because they know we can probably help them out,” explained Puzacke. “We have a lot of kids who come in who are just starting (to raise and/or show horses). We help them figure out what they need.”

Puzacke said the store’s success can also be attributed to the number of loyal customers who simply like to return regularly to keep up on current fashion trends and see what new products are being offered. Saltwell Western Store offers several one-of-a-kind show fashions and jewelry pieces. “Some of our turquoise jewelry is one-of-a-kind. I have to go buy it personally in Denver from the artisans themselves,” said Puzacke.

Of course, customer service is another reason for their success, as most customers are offered a friendly greeting when they enter the store, and staff members can provide expert advice on horse care. With everything for the lover of western apparel, gifts, jewelry and décor and horse enthusiasts from the trail rider to those who frequent the show arenas, Saltwell Western Store is a destination store with something for everyone.
