Group Tour Summer 2009

Wander the Wonders of Wayne County

Wayne County was named in honor of General Mad Anthony Wayne, a war colleague of George Washington and the victor at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. Wooster is the county seat of Wayne County and was named after General David Wooster who was a Revolutionary War hero. The Lincoln Highway Historic Byway runs through Wayne County which is part of the original 260 mile Ohio Alignment of U.S. Route 30 that stretched from New York City to San Francisco.

Day One:

Check in at one of the counties properties such as the Hilton Garden Inn or the Hampton Inn in Wooster. Both offer continental breakfasts and indoor pools.

Enjoy your evening dinner at the Amish Door Restaurant. With 2 locations, the Amish Door Restaurant specializes in family style Amish style recipes. Group menus consist of rolls, salad, choice of 1, 2, or 3 meats, homemade mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffïng, corn, hot or cold beverage and homemade pies. Elegant dining, quality bakery and gift shop.

Day Two and Three:

Depart your hotel with a local tour guide. Learn about the local Amish culture as we visit these one of a kind locally owned family businesses.

Care-n-Share... You will see hundreds of locally hand made crafts, quilts, baskets, candles and misc. items. This is not your “typical” craft store. All the items were made by local Amish people with special needs of all ages. You’ll be greeted with a friendly face! Usually a quilting or basket making demonstration is given with advanced notice. Take your chance on a year end drawing for the Log Cabin Quilt.

Toy and Hobby Museum... The group’s eyes will be wide open as they enter this unique museum of your childhood past. Over the years they have collected 6,000 toy trucks and various other collectibles including dolls, pencils, and early 40,’s, 50’s and 60’s memorabilia. Neatly displayed a and arranged, this will be a place you will not soon forget. The couple will greet you, answer any questions and share their story.

Shisler’s Cheese... You will find a plethora of cheeses, both domestic and imported such as Asiago, Raclette, Jarlsberg, Colby, Muenster and Swiss. The owner, Rita and her staff will be glad to let you sample “anything” in the store! Various meats, non—perishable bulk food items, chocolates, candy, homemade pies, and angel food cakes. Free samples upon arrival.

Hartzler’s Dairy... This family owned business gets up at 3:30 AM every morning and begins the process of milking which produces a high quality of milk. They offer a virtual tour of the family farm, processing plant, milk bottling and butter churning. Farmers since 1955, the family began their dairy business in 1996. All their milk is bottled in glass containers, no plastic. Their dairy cattle are fed on organic fields, using no herbicides or pesticides. Some of their cattle actually get to sleep on mattresses! Did you know a cow cannot give milk until she has given birth to a calf! Each person will receive a small ice cream cone after the tour.

P Graham Dunn... is “inspiring” in itself. This is not just any retail store! Enter into a 6,000 sq ft. gallery featuring the complete line of P. Graham Dunn products. Looking up and around the carved crown molding and trim, you will see a laser engraved scripture from Exodus 31: 3, 4. This is an inspiring example of Christian entrepreneurship representing the quality of “Made in America.” Free factory tours are available. Have one of their products personally engraved while you shop.

Lehman’s... You know you’ll be able to fnd that hard to find non-electrical household or hardware items. Butter churns, ice cream makers, kitchen utensils, kerosene lamps, pottery, cook stoves, John Deere toy tractors, children’s toys, large selection of do it yourself books, local cultural reading and local cookbooks from Mennonite and Amish churches. Adjacent the store is a large quilt shoppe with fabrics, knitting supplies, patterns and finished quilts. On Thursdays, many of the local Amish are bringing their livestock to the weekly auction and sell fresh produce at the outdoor flea market. Enjoy lunch on your own inside Lehman’s at the Cast Iron Café.

Ramseyer Farms... (August, Sept and Oct. tours only) the groups enjoy a 30 minute scenic hayride through the woods and farm. (The wagon is wheelchair accessible) Pick your own pumpkins to take home with you. Make a life-sized scarecrow as an individual or as a group, travel through the 8 acre Ohio Maze while learning fun facts of Ohio’s history and learn about famous Ohioans.

Miller or Yoder... it will not be hard to find an Amish home to enjoy your evening meal in. Homemade bread, hot and cold beverage, salad, baked chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes with browned butter and gravy, noodles, green beans and 3 types of pies, all served family style. After the meal, enjoy a couple of songs by the Amish children.

Additional attractions are available to compliment this itinerary.
