Be a Happy Camper at Whispering Hills Campground
By Dave Mast
SHREVE - Whispering Hills RV Park & Campground is set smack dab in
the world’s largest Amish community in scenic Holmes County, Ohio.
And what better place to relax and unwind than in the scenic, rolling
hills of this unique, peaceful setting. Beautifully wooded hills and lush,
rolling farmlands come together to create a haven which will revitalize
your senses and rejuvenate your spirit. Families and friends are invited
to leave their burdens behind and join us for the simple pleasure of life.
They offer great amenities, facilities and special events for the whole
family.
While you sit back and enjoy the serenity of nature, close your eyes
and listen intently to the calm breeze...within the sounds of the forest,
you may just hear the beckoning whisper of the hills.
"I honestly believe that we've got one of the cleanest, most scenic
RV parks in the state," said Roger Murray. "We've worked hard
to become very family-oriented. There are a lot of different things to
do here, and not many parks have 129 acres dedicated to recreational facilities
like we have here."
Whispering Hills offers a taste of nature at its finest to their campers,
with hiking trails, fishing, a nature lodge, and the lovable animals in
Grandpa's Farm. After a hike around the park, visitors may choose to cool
off in the Olympic-size pool before venturing over to the new mini-golf
course, or for a little more exercise, play a round of disc golf.
For guests who wish to engage in more physical group activities, there
is basketball and volleyball. Nature abounds nearby for those who especially
enjoy birding and biking. Killbuck Marsh Ohio's largest inland marsh outside
the Lake Erie region) is within five miles of the park, while three biking
trails in Holmes County, Mohican Valley, and the Kokosing Gap provide
more extensive adventures into the Amish area's local environment.
There are plenty of ways to relax and kick back, as well as be active
at Whispering Hills. Aside from the free hot showers, there's weekend
entertainment from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Gospel music many Sunday
mornings, planned activities, game room, playgrounds, and unlike some
places, pets are welcomed at Whispering Hills.
Whether it's your love of nature, outdoor recreation, or shopping for
handcrafted Amish furniture, Whispering Hills will make your visit to
Amish Country a most pleasant and memorable experience.
Aside from attracting families, Murray said that they have tried to gear
themselves toward becoming more accessible to retired people with the
larger RVs. "We've seen more and more of the large RVs coming in,
and we've been gearing up toward accommodating them better," said
Murray. "Those people are as important to us as families are."
Whispering Hills is currently in the process of finishing off its new,
11-site, pull-through facility to accommodate the large motor homes.
They are also working to refurbish several other facilities in the park,
including a complete overhaul to their kitchen area, landscape around
the mini-golf course and development of a large new playground area which
will have goats in the field surrounding the playground area.
They are also improving the dock area by adding three kayaks, four paddle
boats and a row boat.
And when all the activities which come from exploring the park's many
resources and activities leave you famished, you're in luck. The Ol' Smokehaus
Restaurant is open seasonally and provides guests with summer time ice
cream treats, snacks, and some very fine country cooking. Saturday and
Sunday mornings begin with a Country Breakfast Buffet while our specialty
menus compliment the ever changing featured weekend entertainment and
activities. But most of all, you must try one of Ruth's Famous Apple Dumplings!
They are exceptionally special.
