Plenty of things to do in Tucarawas County
Escape, experience, and enjoy Tuscarawas County is brimming with unique opportunities for a group tour Tuscarawas County is so full of interesting attractions that it’s hard to fit everything into two days. Begin by traveling back in time to the splendor of the Victorian era at the J.E. Reeves Victorian Home and Carriage House Museum in Dover. The 17-room mansion, once home to Dover industrialist J.E. Reeves, has all the amenities of wealth and elegance of the time that showcases the Queen Anne style of the early 1900s. At Warther Carvings and Gardens in Dover, group members can experience the story of world-famous master carver Ernest “Mooney” Warther on a guided tour through the world-class museum that showcases Warther the man and his carvings. See the animated replica of the steel mill and ebony and ivory steam locomotive carvings, including President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train. Also available to tour are the Button House, Swiss gardens, and the knife-making and wood shops, where visitors can see knives being crafted by hand. After touring the museum, enjoy a hobo lunch at Warther Carvings with the beautiful Swiss gardens as a backdrop. Schoenbrunn Village State Memorial was founded in 1772 as a Moravian mission to more than 300 Delaware Indians who constructed the first Christian church and school in Ohio. Here, visitors get a rare insight to the meeting of Indian and European cultures. The reconstructed village consists of 17 log buildings, gardens, and an original mission cemetery. The museum center also has a video depicting the mission’s struggle to survive. Before dinner, check in to the hotel. At Dutch Valley Restaurant, enjoy a bountiful Amish-style dinner complete with mouth-watering roast beef, crispy broasted chicken, and real mashed potatoes, not to mention fresh-baked pie for dessert. In the evening, groups can be a back-stage tour at the outdoor drama Trumpet in the Land, which transports audience members to the time when the Ohio frontier got its first settlement in Schoenbrunn. The second day in Tuscarawas County begins at Zoar Village State Memorial. Tour the site of a German Religious Communal Society that lasted from 1817 to 1898. Group members can visit homes and shops in the 10-building historical site, which has a bakery, greenhouse, and blacksmith shop. Next, escape to the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum. Dennison was known as Dreamsville USA during World War II. Discover the interactive children’s car, a rare World War II military hospital, and local history displays. The restored 1873 Pennsylvania Railroad Depot houses a museum, restaurant, gift shop, theater, and model train display. The Trax Diner is a perfect stop for lunch. In Newcomerstown, groups can visit the USS Radford National Naval Museum and the nearby Temperance Tavern/Cy Young Museum. The naval museum is maintained by the former officers and crew members of the famous USS Radford, a destroyer that earned fame in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and during the Cold War era. The Cy Young Museum and tavern is preserved in its original 1841 status and includes displays on baseball great Cy Young and Ohio State University football coach Woody Hayes.
