The Bigham House offers sweet Victorian dreams for guests
By Jennifer Kneuss
The restful charm and elegance of The Bigham House 1869 Bed and Breakfast, just a few steps away from Historic Downtown Millersburg, is the perfect place for Ohio Amish Country guests to experience exceptional hospitality combined with Victorian charm.
This Holmes County B&B offers a warm welcome from innkeepers Doug and Jane Johnston, whose ownership of the house is the result of a love of antiques and an appreciation for history.
From the front foyer and its unusual converted 110-year-old gas lamp with antique tinted glass globes, to the stately four-poster mahogany bed tucked into the Honeymoon Suite, Old World charm and elegance are evident everywhere.
“The Bigham House comes with a historical, true story,” commented Jane. “Doug and I truly enjoy having people in the house and sharing it with them.”
First-floor accommodations are provided in the Bigham Suite. A cheery fireplace flickers in the rich ambience of gleaming woodwork and time polished antique furnishings. The suite features a deluxe Select Comfort mattress and a private, full-sized bath.
The open stairwell of the house climbs to the second floor landing and a recessed alcove. Step to your left, and you enter the lovely charm of the Cottage Suite. The suite evokes the feel of an English countryside cottage, with a gorgeous brass bed as its centerpiece. Lovely garden flowers dance across the walls, and vintage photos and mementos beckon a closer look. A private bath with shower is adjoining. Across the hall from the Cottage Suite is the Victoria Suite, with a décor uniquely suited to the overall house style. A soothing, sea-foam color scheme has an intricately crafted four-poster cherry wood bed as its focal point. With a luxurious two-person whirlpool bath to relax in, the suite offers unparalleled comfort. Both suites have an unusual double-door system for ultimate privacy.
Tucked away on a small landing between the two floors is a special treat – a whimsically placed Honeymoon Suite. This premier suite has a private outside entrance as well, and its interior sets the mood for romance. A magnificent four-poster mahogany bed, gas fireplace, skylights, Victorian-inspired settee, and impeccable decorating add to this private getaway. As an unusual twist, a few steps away is a bath with two-person whirlpool tub and an exotic locale theme transports guests to a private tropical paradise.
Amenities abound when you stay at the house, including complimentary snacks and drinks, and, of course, a bountiful breakfast. The Shaker House, located next door, also provides living quarters for the innkeepers, as well as the Shaker Suite, a third-level efficiency suite with three bedrooms, private bath, fully-equipped kitchen, sitting room, and patio area, and the Shaker House Primitive Interiors on street level, which is also available for the public to shop and browse.
Doug and Jane Johnston look forward to having you as their guests. The Bigham House is located at 151 South Washington Street, Millersburg, Ohio 44654. Visit the house online at www.bighamhouse.com, or contact the innkeepers at 740-525-5525 or 330-473-6003.
