Trailside Lodging OAC Business Review

By Heather J. Weaver

Whether you enjoy shopping for handmade Amish crafts, participating in outdoor recreational activities, or secluding yourself in your own private hideaway, Trailside Lodging in Millersburg, Ohio is the place to stay.

Boasting of fully furnished, cozy cabins, these two and three-bedroom guest facilities are located along the impressive Holmes County Trail, stretching 15 miles along the old Cleveland and Pittsburgh railroad.

The trail, which now runs from Fredericksburg to Killbuck, consists of one asphalt lane, perfect for biking, rollerblading, running and wheelchairs, and one lane for horse-drawn vehicles and horseback riding. Even during the winter season, the Holmes County Trail remains stunningly beautiful and accessible for sleigh rides, cross-country skiing, and snow-shoeing.

According to Stefanie Kauffman, general manager of Trailside Lodging, the interior design of the inviting cabins is an eclectic mix of new and old, providing a very earthy, tranquil vibe that is still fun and quirky. “We want to capture the essence of nature and the trail,” she explained.

All the spacious lodgings contain full kitchens, two baths and two-story lofts, making for a luxurious and peaceful stay. Guests come away from the experience glowing with compliments such as these taken from the guest book at Trailside Lodging: “The beds are heavenly…”, “…a night here felt like a small, second honeymoon”, “The suite was so beautifully decorated. Right when we walked in, it was just what I pictured. Out of all of the local places to stay, it was definitely the most inviting!”

Because downtown Millersburg is only a mile away, there is no shortage of entertainment for those family members keen on shopping and dining, and with special accommodations provided by Trailside Lodging, there is no need for anyone to stay home.

The two large cabins are separated by a fence with a gate that opens to allow free access back and forth. Groups numbering up to 16 will find abundant space at Trailside. The facilities are perfect for family reunions, large holiday meals, and church retreats.

“One of our large cabins is pet friendly,” Kaufman added. “So you can literally bring your whole family. I think that having a facility that can sleep up to 16 is really fun. You can get a hotel room or B&B room anywhere, but . . . this is a home away from home.”

The cabins sit in a large, open field, with space enough for soccer, volleyball, croquet, and other yard activities. With wrap-around porches, private patios, luxurious hot tubs, gas grills and fire pits, the perfect blend of recreation and relaxation can be achieved.

Trailside Lodging prides itself in providing guests all they need for their dream getaway to be realized. “More than anything, I like to give them the feeling that they’re in good hands,” said Kauffman. “Whether it’s sending them where they want to go, helping them find what they’re looking for, or having every possible thing in place at the cabins when they come – all their needs are met . . . I haven’t encountered a request that we couldn’t fulfill.”

“I feel like I have a unique perspective on the area because I’m not from here,” Kauffman continued. “I moved here about 10 years ago, and I like sharing my perspective on the area – sending people to my favorite spots, giving directions for back roads, and seeing the best spot to watch the sunset. I like sharing Millersburg with them. I think it’s a pretty well-kept secret, with so many unique personalities and shops and craftspeople.”

For those wanting to stay a bit closer to Millersburg, White House Guest Suites are the way to go. Next door to the train depot and also sitting on the Holmes County Trail, this exquisite 120-year-old restored house is just one block from bustling downtown and offers three private suites that sleep up to six.

“One of our greatest compliments,” Kauffman explained, “is that a number of people have called me the morning they were supposed to check out and said, ‘We haven’t left yet. We’ve been so comfortable that we haven’t gone out to see the area. Can we stay another night or two?’”

In just two short years of operation, Trailside Lodging has seen numerous return visitors attracted to all it has to offer, and in the light of its success, Trailside is already working on improvements to provide even more. Its fourth cabin will be completed by spring, and plans are underway to build an outdoor pavilion able to shelter 40-60 people for large events.

Special winter offers and extended stay discounts are available, so don’t wait another weekend.
