Here's a two day itinerary you may want to try Amish Country is at its best in Walnut Creek, where some of the finest food, hospitality, and amenities that cater to large groups of visitors can be found.
Dutchman Hospitality is a staple in the area with its restaurants, gift shops, and hotels. Walnut Creek cheese is on the fast track to being a must-stop for visitors. Its spacious store makes it a perfect destination for a large bus tour groups. The store sells everything from Swiss cheese to kitchen gadgets to monster-size ice cream cones.
Day One:
Noon - Arrive in Walnut Creek. Tour the late 1800s Victorian house that has been transformed into Carlisle Gifts. The charming house with gingerbread fretwork and wrap-around porch contains items ranging from embroidered linens, English teapots, and handmade wooden toys to inspirational items.
1:30pm - Sit down to a delicious country-style lunch at Der Dutchman Restaurant. With menu items ranging from traditional Amish foods to "modern" choices, guests get an authentic taste from an Amish country kitchen.
3:00pm - Take a ride in an Amish buggy around the village of Walnut Creek, as an Amish man drives the horse through the village. Then stroll along Walnut Street to visit other shops.
7:00pm - Return to Der Dutchman for a bountiful family-style meal with all the trimmings. Whether it's country-style ham, mouth watering roast beef, or broasted chicken with real mashed potatoes, the evening meal is one to be savored. Guest can look out across the valley at the nearby Amish farms. Later, check in to the Carlisle Inn for an evening of rest and relaxation.
Day Two:
Start the morning with breakfast at the hotel.
10:00am - Tour Walnut Creek Cheese Shop at a grocery store where the locals buy their groceries. Get a feeling for what Amish Coountry is really like as you share the aisles with Amish women buying their weekly groceries. With an inventory of everything from bulk foods, deli meats and cheese to kitchenware, Walnut Creek Cheese has something for everyone. Before leavingget an ice cream cone with nearly one pound of homemade ice cream stacked high. New this autumn at Walnut Creek Cheese is an expansion that will nearly double the size of the store.
1:00pm- Travel to Sugarcreek for lunch at Dutch Valley Restaurant. The sister restaurant to Der Dutchman offers the same great Amish style food. After lunch don't forget to visit the Dutch Valley Bakery, where homemade goodness is personified, from cookies to fresh strawberry pie.
2:30pm- Gifts are abundant at Dutch Valley Gifts. With a wide genre of items from barn to boutique, every shopper will find a piece of Amish Country to take home. Other shops include Dutch Valley Furniture, with handmade pieces for every room, and Dutch Creek Foods, with a variety of speciality and local traditional foods.
For groups who perfer to spend another night in the area, the nearby Carlisle Inn offers the same amenities as the Carlisle Inn in Walnut Creek, but also has a swimming pool.
